Past Perfect
Affirmative form
Subject + auxiliary had + verb in past tense + complement
Negative form
Subject + auxiliary had + not + verb in past tense + complement
Interrogative form
Auxiliary had + subject + past tense verb + complement ?
The past perfect is a way of expressing the past and how things happened, however it is used to keep a specific order of events. without the need to specify the order of the facs, since it makes very clear.
example:
Afirmative
- After Sofie had finished her work, she went to lunch.
- Harold had know about it for a while
- I washed the floor when the painter had gone.
Negative
- I had not eaten at that restaurant before today.
- My friends hadn't ever gone to France.
- He wasn't at the party as I had arrived late.
Interrogative
- Had he not written the letter?
- Had they not informed the teacher?
- Had she returned last month?
The past perfect is often confused with the present perfect, because both explain events that happened in an order, but one is in the past while the other is in the present but relating it to something in the past.
